Frederic Edwin Church, pupil of Thomas Cole and the most celebrated American landscape painter of his generation, brought the Hudson River School to international prominence. Twilight in the Wilderness, completed in 1860, was among the works he showed in London in 1862, where it confirmed his standing across the Atlantic. Acquired by Cleveland in 1965, it remains one of the most admired American landscapes of the nineteenth century.
