The young Baptist, dressed in his camel-skin tunic, sits against a luminous Tuscan landscape, his reed cross resting across his shoulder. Piero di Cosimo was the most fantastical painter of fifteenth-century Florence, beloved for the strange creatures and dreamlike moods of his panels — and here the tenderness of the small devotional image is heightened by his signature poetry of light and shadow.
