A jockey clad in bright silks urges his horse through a burst of speed, the animal flattened into a flying gallop that fills the sheet. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec printed this color lithograph in 1899, based on the same observation of the racetrack that produced his celebrated cycle for the dancer May Belfort and the posters of the Montmartre years. Printed with a few bold flat tones and his characteristic nervous line, the sheet distills Lautrec’s lifelong fascination with horses in motion into a single compact image of speed.
