The Virgin Mary presents the Christ child to Saint Anne and Saint Catherine of Alexandria in a luminous, warmly lit composition, the rich fabrics and attentive expressions creating an atmosphere of quiet familial devotion. Jusepe de Ribera — the Valencian-born painter who spent his career in Naples — abandoned the harsh tenebrism of his early manner for the radiant colour and soft handling of this late masterpiece.
