The Gleaners

The Gleaners shows three peasant women gathering the last scraps of wheat after the harvest — a right granted to the poorest in rural society. Jean-François Millet’s dignified, almost monumental portrayal of rural labour was controversial in its day for its unflinching depiction of poverty, and it remains a landmark of Realist art, now housed at the Musée d’Orsay.
