The Death of Socrates

David’s great Neoclassical history painting presents the philosopher Socrates calmly taking hemlock before his grieving disciples, a scene drawn from Plato’s Phaedo. Exhibited at the Salon of 1787 and immediately acclaimed, it established David as France’s leading history painter and became a defining manifesto of the principled, civic art that would culminate in the Revolution.
