The Crucifixion with the Virgin and Saint John by Hendrick ter Brugghen is a powerful Utrecht Caravaggist composition depicting the emotional climax of the Passion. Ter Brugghen was a leading member of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, Dutch painters who traveled to Rome and brought Caravaggio’s revolutionary chiaroscuro technique back to the Netherlands.
