A river ferry packed with cattle and passengers crosses calm water beneath a wide Dutch sky. Esaias van de Velde was one of the first painters to treat the everyday landscape as a subject in its own right, and this early masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age still carries the freshness of a scene observed on the spot — the ferryman poling, cows standing placidly, a sailboat drifting in the distance.
