Three elegant young women gather around a table spread with playing cards, one turning to the viewer with a knowing smile. Caspar Netscher, a pupil of Gerard ter Borch, made his name painting the polite, candle-lit interiors of the Dutch upper classes, and this canvas from about 1665 is a jewel of the type. The shimmering satin gowns, the tilted candlelight and the suspended moment of the game give the scene the air of a whispered conversation.
