A grand domestic interior opens onto the birth of the Virgin: Saint Anne rests in a canopied bed while attendants prepare the bath and the infant Mary is held toward her. Fra Carnevale, an Urbino painter, fused the monumental architecture of the early Renaissance with the everyday details of a fifteenth-century household.
