Eakins’s meticulously observed rowing scene captures the Biglin brothers mid-turn on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The painting belongs to a celebrated series of rowing pictures Eakins produced in the 1870s, each built from painstaking preparatory studies of light on water and the anatomy of athletic effort.
The work is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art (accession 1927.1984), from the Hinman B. Hurlbut Collection.
