The Balcony Room

Painted when Menzel was only thirty, The Balcony Room is an empty Berlin interior seen through open balcony doors. The room is bathed in reflected light that spills across the floor and up the walls, rendered in loose, confident brushwork far ahead of its time. With no figures and almost no narrative, the painting is an early meditation on light and space that anticipates the concerns of modern painting.
