The Adoration of the Magi

The three Magi kneel before the infant Christ, offering their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh while the Virgin looks on. Joos van Wassenhove, a Netherlandish master who worked in Urbino for the Duke of Montefeltro, painted this large canvas in the early 1470s, blending the crisp realism of Flemish painting with the monumental calm of the Italian Renaissance. The richly dressed kings, the ruined classical setting and the still, holy figures make it a meeting of two worlds.
