A low sun breaks through drifting clouds to warm a rolling autumn landscape, the golden field and dark trees dissolving into soft, breathing light. George Inness painted this in 1892, the year of his death, when his art had become almost wholly spiritual — landscape reduced to its emotional essence. The cows grazing in the distance, the hazy hills and the glow at the horizon make it a meditation on the countryside as much as a picture of it.
