Saint George and the Dragon captures the legendary moment when the mounted knight pierces the dragon that has menaced a city, the chaste princess he saves standing to the side in the deep landscape. Rogier van der Weyden, among the most influential painters of the fifteenth-century Netherlands, packed the tiny panel with the compressed drama, crisp line and jewel-bright colour for which he is revered. Painted about 1432 and 1435, early in a career that would shape Netherlandish painting for generations, the miniature oil holds the emotional charge and technical perfection of a far larger work.
