Isabella of Portugal, duchess of Burgundy, is set against a dark ground in a tall white horned headdress and a fur-trimmed gown, the face modelled with the crisp, sculptural clarity that marks the portraiture of Rogier van der Weyden and his workshop. Long a touchstone of early Netherlandish portraiture, the panel plays the hard edge of the painted bodice against the softened planes of the face, each fold of the veil falling to its own precise rhythm. The painting is held in the J. Paul Getty Museum.
