Portrait of a Young Man

A young Florentine in a black doublet regards us with the cool, self-possessed gaze that is Bronzino’s signature. Court painter to Cosimo I de’ Medici, Bronzino turned the Florentine portrait into an exercise in perfect control — porcelain skin, precise tailoring, and a stillness that borders on the sculptural.
