Painted in 1639 at the height of Rembrandt’s success as a portraitist in Amsterdam, this panel is the pendant to his likeness of the sitter’s husband, the arms dealer and financier Andries Bicker. The couple belonged to Amsterdam’s mercantile patriciate, whose patronage helped fill Rembrandt’s books in the decade before his fortunes turned with The Night Watch and his later financial difficulties.
