Bierstadt captured the thundering cascade of Nevada Falls in Yosemite Valley, painting from sketches made during his trips to the American West. The luminous light and towering scale exemplify the Luminist vision that made Bierstadt the preeminent painter of the Western landscape.
The work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession 1979.490.3), gift of Mrs. J. Augustus Barnard, 1979.
