Ruisdael’s mountain waterfall pictures, inspired by his trip to the German border region, brought a dramatic Alpine scale to Dutch landscape painting. The cascading water and rugged rocks gave him scope for the dynamic compositions and atmospheric intensity that earned him the title ‘the greatest of the Dutch landscapists.’
The work is now in the Rijksmuseum (accession SK-A-348).
