Bierstadt rendered Yosemite’s granite monolith in the luminous haze of the American Sublime, painting from sketches made during his 1863 trip to California. The warm light flooding the valley exemplifies the Luminist approach that made Bierstadt the most commercially successful landscape painter of his generation.
The work is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art (accession 1922.684), from the Hinman B. Hurlbut Collection.
