Hammershøi was a Danish painter known for his muted, atmospheric interiors that evoke a profound sense of stillness and contemplation. Working in Copenhagen, he developed a highly personal style characterized by restricted tonal palettes and an almost obsessive attention to the quality of light in empty rooms. His work was largely overlooked during his lifetime but has been reassessed since the 1990s as one of the most distinctive contributions to European Symbolism and tonalist painting.
