Mariana

Mariana is John Everett Millais’s Pre-Raphaelite illustration of the forsaken heroine from Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure and Tennyson’s poem of the same name. Weary from embroidery, Mariana rises and stretches before a stained-glass window, her longing captured in the autumn leaves and the motto “In sorrow I do not weary.” The work’s jewel-like color and obsessive detail are hallmarks of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
