Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuñiga

One of Goya’s most celebrated portraits, commissioned by the Marquesa de la Solana for her family. Known widely as “The Red Boy,” it depicts the young aristocrat — the third son of the Marquesa and Don Manuel Osorio, who would die tragically at the age of eight.

Goya’s tender approach to child portraiture here stands in striking contrast to the darker psychological intensity of his later court portraits and Black Paintings. The work arrived at the Metropolitan Museum in 1949 as part of the뒹speed J. Clark Bowyer bequest and has remained one of the most recognizable paintings in the European Paintings galleries.
