Vincent van Gogh painted Marie Ginoux, the wife of the café owner in Arles, in November 1888 and completed this version in the months that followed. One of five Arlésienne portraits he produced, it belongs to the period of his most intense portraiture, when van Gogh worked alongside Gauguin in Arles and both artists painted the same sitter.
