Two women stand by an open linen cupboard in a sunlit Dutch interior, one reaching to a shelf while a small child looks on, a further room and doorway opening beyond. Pieter de Hooch painted this celebrated domestic scene in 1663, during his years in Amsterdam that produced his most serene pictures of household life. The orderly house interior, the cool daylight through windows and the glimpse into adjoining rooms are the hallmarks of the art that made de Hooch, alongside Vermeer, the foremost painter of the Dutch interior, and the picture remains one of the most admired in his oeuvre.
