Green Wheat Fields, Auvers spreads a river of wheat across the canvas as a road rushes back toward the far horizon, the grain rolling away in swelling, wind-driven strokes. Painted in May 1890, in the little village of Auvers-sur-Oise where Vincent van Gogh spent the last two months of his life, it belongs to the rapturous final landscapes in which he poured his sorrow and his love of the earth. The road that cuts through the grain seems to pull the eye toward the furthest, brightest edge of the field.
