A hare hangs from a stick as the principal motif of this hunting trophy, set before a landscape with a sheet of water bordered by statues and pavilions. On the plinth of a sculpted base to the right rest black and white grapes, peaches, apricots, plums and a melon on which a small monkey sits; a wild duck and other birds lie on the ground. Jan Weenix, who trained in the circle of his father Jan Baptist Weenix, made such decorative game pieces after the turn of the century, when hunting trophies of this kind were in great demand among wealthy Dutch burghers eager to advertise their prestige; this one is dated 1709. The painting is held in the Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris.
