Gerard ter Borch’s Gallant Conversation, long known as The Paternal Admonition, is among the most celebrated interior scenes of the Dutch Golden Age. Painted in the mid-1650s, it established the type of elegant, psychologically restrained domestic conversation that made ter Borch’s reputation and influenced generations of genre painters, including Vermeer and Metsu.
