In the 1870s Degas turned decisively to the ballet, and pastel dancer studies such as this remained at the heart of his work for decades. The sheet, from about 1880, shows him refining pose, costume and gesture in his preferred pastel on paper — a medium whose dry, powdery surface suited his experiments with artificial light and arrested movement.
