A small boat is tossed on a dark sea while a storm gathers overhead — and in the stern, Christ sleeps through it all, calm amid the panic of the apostles. Delacroix painted this late, meditative canvas in 1853, finding in the biblical storm scene a vehicle for the turbulence and faith that run through his work.
