Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s At the Moulin Rouge, painted between 1892 and 1895, evokes the smoky, gaslit world of the famous Paris cabaret. In the foreground the dancer La Goulue and her companions sit at a table, while behind them the crowd dissolves in the glare of the lights; the artist himself appears at the right. Lautrec’s bold diagonals, acid color, and unsentimental eye made this the defining image of Montmartre’s nightlife in the 1890s.
