A young Egyptian woman stands in full-length profile, her child balanced on her shoulder, her vivid striped garments and silver jewellery picked out against a plain ground. Léon Bonnat was the most celebrated French portraitist of his generation, and this large canvas — painted after a journey up the Nile — shows his mastery of sober naturalism and dignified presence.
