Bierstadt was the most commercially successful American landscape painter of the nineteenth century, whose grand-scale views of the American West helped shape the national mythology of Manifest Destiny. His dramatic compositions of snow-capped peaks and luminous valleys were enormously popular with a public eager for images of the western frontier.
