A Woman Reading

A young woman in a bright blue bodice reads a small book in her lap, seated in a landscape of soft clouds and distant water. Camille Corot painted her about 1869, in his final years, when the figure paintings he had long kept private began to rival his landscapes in the affection of collectors; this is one of the most serene of those late studies. The painting is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
